When you are choosing the window treatments for your house you are faced with the problem of whether to go for curtains or blinds. It is not an easy one to solve but personally I would go for curtains every time. Blinds work in office buildings and dentist’s waiting rooms and nowhere else. For the home it always should be curtains. They have far more style and elegance than blinds and you can find a set to complement any type of interior decoration you might have.

Here are a few of the reasons why blinds will never be seen in my home and why I prefer curtains.

Health

Nowadays more and more people suffer with allergies and asthma, This makes a home that is as dust free as possible essential for many people. Blinds are a dust trap. In fact it would be very difficult to create a better trap for dust than Venetian-type or horizontal window blinds. It is like they were developed specifically to gather as much dust as they can. To keep them clean and stop dust accumulating they must be wiped clean everyday. Curtains obviously attract hardly any dust and hoovering them from time to time will keep them fresh.

Insulation

If your heating bill is a worry for you( and it is for nearly everyone these days) curtains are the clever decision. Curtains stop the heat escaping from a room and mean that you could turn your thermostat down several notches. The insulation properties of blinds are about the same as a sheet of paper.

Style

For me curtains just look a lot better than window blinds. Even when they are open and not in use they still add character to a room. They definitely add some character to the rooms they are used in. All window blinds do however is stop sunlight getting in. Although they do it well they don’t add anything to a room. Curtains are by far the best choice when it comes to looks.

Bay Windows

If you want to ruin the way a beautiful bay window looks put in blinds in it. No don’t. Instead get a curtain pole made to measure and hang a lovely set of curtains from it. This will stop your house looking like an office and you from wondering if you are still at work.

Reliability

With regards to reliability there is only ever going to be one winner. Blinds will go wrong in a 101 ways . They get tangled, stuck, snap or just plain won’t work. Complex mechanisms especially the ones found in Venetian blinds are very prone to breaking. Curtains are simple to take care of and use and there is not much that can go wrong with them.

Those are just a few reasons why I’ll always favour curtains for my home. Blinds are perfectly suited to the office but in other places curtains are the best choice.
